Sweating in Sarawak
Sarawak is home to more than 27 distinct indigenous groups that speak over 45 different languages and dialects. As its largest tribe, Iban can be found all over the map in the Malaysian state, from the outskirts of Kuching to the impenetrable jungles near the border of Brunei. At 600,000 strong, they make up roughly 30 percent of Sarawak’s population. Early Iban settlers emigrated from Kalimantan, Indonesia and set up longhouses in the river valleys. While the majority of Iban practice Christianity, they still retain many traditional animist rituals and beliefs, a few of which involve human skulls.
Big Bend: America’s Last Frontier
West Texas has often been considered one of America’s last frontiers. As a no-man’s land of cacti, tarantulas, cow skulls and rattlesnakes, it’s a place where you can drive for days without seeing more than a half dozen cars and pitch a tent on side the road for a quiet night of sleep. There is nothing in this state that is small: big men wearing big hats drive big trucks on ranches that stretch so far and wide, no one has a clue where they begin and end.
Honky Tonkin’ in Nashville
On any given night, country music flows from the honky tonk bars on Broadway Avenue in Nashville. Tucked between 4th and 5th Avenues, Honky Tonk Row is a tightly-packed block of hole-in-the-wall joints where men and women with wide-brimmed cowboy hats and shiny boots play their hearts out in a haze of cigarette smoke and neon lights.

Not too long ago headlights were big two-pound blocks that hung from your helmet or your hat and were generally only used by spelunkers or dorks. That certainly isn’t the case anymore. Having traveled to many countries where the criminals can steal the shirt off your back without you even noticing, I’m a pretty security-conscious traveler.
